Execution
- 1Position the patient sitting.
- 2Fully elevate the arm through shoulder forward flexion and external rotation.
- 3Stabilize the humerus to prevent shoulder substitution.
- 4Flex the elbow.
- 5Assess elbow flexion range and end feel.
Positive outcome
The test is positive if elbow flexion is limited and the end feel is muscular tissue stretch. Magee states that normal triceps length should allow elbow flexion with a soft-tissue approximation end feel.
CommentThis is an impairment-only length test. It may be relevant when overhead elevation is limited, but it does not diagnose cuff pathology. Interpret alongside shoulder flexion, latissimus/pectoralis length, and elbow ROM.
