Pectoralis Major Length Test

Pectoralis major

Source: Physiotutors

Execution

  1. 1Position the patient supine.
  2. 2Ask the patient to clasp the hands behind the head.
  3. 3Allow or guides the arms to lower toward the table.
  4. 4Observe whether both elbows reach the examination table.
  5. 5Compare side-to-side range and end feel.

Positive outcome

The test is positive if the elbows do not reach the table. Magee states that this indicates tightness or contracture of the pectoralis major muscle.

CommentThis is a muscle-length impairment test rather than a diagnostic test. It does not identify the cause of anterior shoulder pain by itself. Interpret with posture, thoracic mobility, pectoralis minor length, and shoulder elevation findings.
