Renne’s Test

Source: Physiotutors

Execution

  1. 1Ask the patient to stand on the symptomatic leg.
  2. 2Palpate or applies pressure over the lateral femoral epicondyle.
  3. 3Ask the patient to slowly flex and extend the knee in weight bearing.
  4. 4Focuse on the range around 30 to 40 degrees of knee flexion.
  5. 5Record whether familiar lateral knee pain is reproduced.

Positive outcome

Reproduction of lateral knee pain near 30 degrees of knee flexion during weight bearing is positive. The finding supports iliotibial band friction syndrome when pain is localized over the lateral femoral epicondyle. Pain elsewhere should prompt alternate testing.

CommentRenne's test is a functional weight-bearing ITBS provocation, but evidence is limited and it overlaps with other lateral knee pain sources. It may be more relevant for runners because it loads the tissue in stance. Value is low due to lack of strong diagnostic studies.
